Her Place in the Woods by David Hakensen tells the story of Helen Hoover, one of Minnesota’s most beloved nature writers, whose vivid essays and books about life on Gunflint Lake captivated readers from the late 1950s through the early 1970s. Best known for The Gift of the Deer and A Place in the Woods, Hoover earned a place alongside writers such as Sigurd Olson and Rachel Carson through her keen observations of the North Woods and its wildlife.
Written by David Hakensen, this first full biography traces Hoover’s unlikely path from a corporate career in Chicago to a remote cabin on Gunflint Lake - without electricity, running water, or prior wilderness experience. Self-taught and fiercely independent, Hoover defied convention, learning to live off the grid while transforming her daily encounters with nature into a prolific and influential body of writing.
