Recognizing and Responding to Hypothermia
May 28 | 5:30-7pm | At CCHE
Instructor: Alice Henshaw, AVH Global LLC, WMAI Instructor
Whether you enjoy camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hunting, snowshoeing, skiing, or simply spending time outdoors, knowing how to recognize and respond to hypothermia can make a critical difference for yourself or someone else.
The presentation will help participants better understand how hypothermia happens, how to recognize early warning signs, and what practical steps can be taken to help prevent and respond to cold-related emergencies in outdoor settings. Participants will discuss real-life situations that can increase risk, including changing weather, wet clothing, cold water exposure, wind, fatigue, and poor preparation.
We encourage participants to bring some of the gear and supplies they would normally carry while camping, hiking, canoeing, or spending time outdoors. During the training, we will discuss how everyday outdoor gear can help in a hypothermia situation and help identify any potential “gaps” where a few additional items or small changes could improve comfort, preparedness, and safety in cold or wet conditions.
