Maple Hill Cemetery History Tour

Maple Hill Cemetery History Tour October 19 | 2-3pm | Maple Hill Cemetery and Maple Hill Church Presenter & Partner: Howard Hedstrom This October, in the season of All Hallows’ Eve, join us for a special guided walk through Maple Hill Cemetery, led by Howard Hedstrom, a member of the family that first donated the land where the cemetery and church now stand. Together, we’ll explore the history, heritage, and stories that make Maple Hill Cemetery a notable part of our community. As we wander the cemetery grounds, along paths possibly once walked by David Caribou and his family, and by Scandinavian immigrants whose names are etched across many headstones, we’ll take in the stories of those who helped shape Cook County. Whether you carry generations of local history in your family or are newly discovering Cook County history, this tour offers a chance to deepen your understanding of the people and place (and maybe even a chance to share one of your own stories) that are woven into the heritage of our community. We’ll also step inside the church, whose distinct Scandinavian architecture you may recognize from photographs or paintings, and hear how it has served as a spiritual and cultural landmark for generations. This experience is not only about history, but also about place: the scattering of fall leaves, the quiet paths beneath the trees, and the timeless landscape of Maple Hill Cemetery. Together, we’ll reflect on the past while taking in the beauty of the season.
