CCHE Fundraiser - Royal Tea Talk: Royal Temper Tantrums that have Changed History

October 7 | 6:15-8pm | At Johnson Heritage PostGuest Speaker: Dr. Karen Halbersleben, British History Instructor & CCHE Board Member

Join us for the Cook County Higher Education Fundraiser and Royal Tea Talk on Wednesday, October 7 at the Johnson Heritage Post. CCHE Board Member Dr. Karen Halbersleben will engage the audience with her presentation.

This year’s Tea Talk will examine three different displays of royal temper, all of which had caused deep and enduring ripples in the history of the country they ruled. In one case, a King’s explosive temper led to the ghastly murder of an Archbishop in his own Cathedral with an impact that cascaded across Europe for hundreds of years. A second, spectacularly ill-considered temper tantrum led first to Civil War and ultimately to the death of the King who had been unable to restrain his most childish impulses. And, finally, a provocative example of emotional childishness that pushed people so far that they rose up against him to administer a rebuke so famous that today’s Charles III extolled it in his recent speech to the US Congress more than 800 years after the fact! Who were these emotional imbeciles, what were they thinking of, and what can we learn from them in a world today that seems to be so full of anger?
