North House Folk School: Artisan Development Program

North House is a unique educational nonprofit whose mission is to enrich lives and build community by teaching traditional northern crafts in a student-centered learning environment that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind.

The Artisan Development Program nurtures the growth of the next generation of traditional craft artisans. The program offers: a budget for professional development and mentorship; practice teaching; a living stipend; studio space; and regional, national, and international connections to institutions and artisans. Applicants with four or more years of work in craft are invited to apply.

Note: This two-year program no longer requires full-time residency in Grand Marais. Housing and studio space are provided in Grand Marais during the first immersion year of the program; during the second independent study year of the program, participants are offered support to pursue their learning goals in a location of their choosing. In addition to stipend below, housing is provided in year one, and a trip to Scandinavia is sponsored in year two, among many other benefits. Please see application for complete details.

Program Dates: September 2025 - June 2027

Application deadline: Monday, March 31, 2025 at noon CST
