CAMPGROUND HOST
Note to candidates: Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve with Okontoe Fellowship. The Campground Host role is a unique chance to live near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and provide hospitality to guests while supporting the ministry’s mission.
Role Summary
Okontoe Fellowship is a 501c3 ministry located off the Gunflint Trail near Grand Marais, MN. The property surrounds Bow Lake and includes a 30+ site campground, cabins, a chapel, and a group camp with a dining hall/lodge and kitchen. Campground Hosts volunteer for a minimum four-week stay and are on duty four to five days each week, including weekends and holidays. In exchange, hosts camp for free in the designated host site. On-duty hours average 20–25 per week and are established by the Executive Director or Property Manager. The Campground Host provides hospitality, assists campers, maintains cleanliness, supports light property upkeep, and helps ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Greeting and Assisting Campers
o Provide information about the campground, local attractions, and services.
o Offer a welcoming presence and support to all guests.
• Answering Questions
o Address camper inquiries regarding rules, regulations, and facilities.
• Check-In/Check-Out Support
o Assist campers in finding their sites and ensuring a smooth arrival/departure process.
o Support firewood sales and other guest services.
• Visitor Feedback
o Relay camper comments, concerns, and suggestions to staff.
• Cleanliness and Maintenance
o Help maintain campsites, restrooms, and common areas in a clean and orderly condition.
o Assist with light-duty cabin cleaning and basic lawn maintenance as needed.
• Safety Monitoring
o Observe and report any hazards that could affect visitor safety.
o Notify staff or law enforcement of illegal, unsafe, or unusual activities.
• Patrolling the Campground
o Regularly check sites and common areas to ensure compliance with rules.
o Set a good example by following all rules and practicing good housekeeping at the host site.
• Community Engagement
o Assist in hosting the Saturday evening community campfire, helping foster fellowship and connection among guests.
o Encourage a welcoming and Christ-centered atmosphere during community gatherings.
• Observance and Stewardship
o Advise campers of rules they may not be aware of.
o Report major violations to staff (hosts do not perform law enforcement duties).
Organizational Relationships
• Reports directly to the Executive Director or Property Manager.
• Works in partnership with staff and volunteers to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
• Provides feedback and reports on campground operations as requested.
Qualifications
• A person or couple whose values align with the mission of Okontoe Fellowship.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to live onsite for a minimum of four weeks.
• Willingness to serve guests with hospitality and uphold campground standards.
• Comfortable assisting with light cleaning, lawn care, and community activities.
• Observant, responsible, and able to handle situations with discretion.
• Satisfactory background check.

• Volunteer position requiring a minimum four-week stay.
