Description: Building healthy soil is the foundation to successful gardening. Join us for this introductory class to learn how to assess the health of your garden’s soil. Expand your understanding of what makes up your soil- from living organisms, to nutrients and texture, while learning tips and tricks to build the health of your soil for better success in next year’s harvest. This class will take place at the Cook County Community Center and adjacent Community Garden and will involve hands-on soil assessments in the garden as well as an indoor portion of class focused on reading and understanding soil tests. If you have previously had a soil test done on your garden soil, bring along the results and we can help interpret them. Questions? Description: Friday, August 21, 1 - 4 pm. Large gardens, homestead gardens, subsistence farms- there are lots of names, but the idea is the same: try to produce as much of your family’s food for the year as possible. Whether you have been gardening for years, or are just intrigued by the idea of trying to grow more of your own food, you are invited to join us for an afternoon of learning as we visit two homestead-scale gardens in Cook County. This is an opportunity to learn from fellow gardeners about how they have developed their garden spaces, strategies they use to extend the growing season, ways they work to build healthy soils, and more! The tour will take place near Colvill, east of Grand Marais. Directions and address provided upon registration. Register at: NORTHWOODSFOODPROJECT.ORG/EVENTS
