The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery will be open extended hours (and a bonus day) during the Grand Marais Arts Festival this weekend.
Join us Saturday and Sunday, July 11 & 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (versus our typical closing time of 4 p.m.), and a bonus day on Monday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

During the Arts Festival, WTIP North Shore Community Radio will be broadcasting live from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday in front of JHP!

Our current main gallery exhibit features batik work from local artist Emily Donovan.

Drawing deep inspiration from the landscape, Donovan utilizes historical methods to forage and procure natural pigments directly from plants and insects.
Also on display is work from our Local Artist of the Month for July,  Julie Arthur. Arthur is a North Shore fiber artist who has spent over five decades mastering weaving, spinning, and yarn dyeing.

Finally, JHP staff have recently rotated artwork from our Anna C. Johnson permanent collection and our Historic Artist's Corner. The newly rotated pieces of art allow for personal glimpses into the heritage of the Johnson family in Grand Marais, and a collection of Cook County townscapes by a variety of historic regional artists, respectively.

Don't forget to visit our other sites, including the History Museum (Saturday 10 a.m. -4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.), the Bally Blacksmith & Metal Shop (Saturday and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.), the Chippewa City Church (Saturday and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.), and the Nee-Gee Fishing Tug and historic replica Fish House (self-guided during the day).

Admission to all Cook County Historical Society sites, including the JHP Gallery, are free and open to the public, with donations graciously accepted.
