The Johnson Heritage Post (JHP) is excited and honored to announce two exhibitions running this December. We are hosting a special tribute dedicated to the legacies of two cherished community members, Jane Burley and Tom Haas, alongside a photographic journey into the night sky by local artist David Johnson.

The JHP 2025 December Artist of the Month is a special exhibition to honor the lives and artistic contributions of two community members who have passed: Jane Burley and Tom Haas. Jane Burley was an active member of the Grand Marais arts community, an early student at the Art Colony, and a JHP volunteer. The display commemorates her life in Grand Marais and features a significant artistic donation made by her family: The Alchemist, a painting by Birney Quick that the artist previously gifted to Jane, which will be displayed publicly for the first time at the JHP.

JHP will also display a selection of works by photographer Tom Haas, who spent two decades capturing over 3,000 black-and-white images of Isle Royale. The featured selection focuses on the islands’ harbors and bays, rocky shorelines, abundant flora, historic fisheries, and cabins, as well as summertime residents. Tom’s large-format camera will also be included as part of the display.

Additionally, we are thrilled to announce our next gallery exhibit, Wonders of the North Shore & More, featuring photography by Grand Marais photographer David Johnson. Johnson, a fourth-generation resident, will share photography documenting night skies, local landscapes, and wildlife, all captured over several years along the North Shore of Lake Superior and within Cook County. The timing of this exhibit is set to coincide with Visit Cook County's annual Dark Sky Festival, celebrating the region's designation as the world's largest certified International Dark Sky Sanctuary. You are invited to an opening reception on Friday, December 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at JHP. The exhibit will run through December 28.
